Adobe has officially launched its new Firefly AI Assistant, previously previewed last October under the codename “Project Moonlight.” This innovative assistant is designed to streamline creative workflows by integrating capabilities across various Adobe applications, including Acrobat, Photoshop, and Express.

The Firefly AI Assistant is slated for release in a public beta within the coming weeks. While its impending availability has been announced, Adobe has not yet disclosed whether its pricing structure will diverge from the existing credit-based subscription tiers associated with Firefly.

Emulating the intuitive nature of contemporary creative tools, the Firefly AI Assistant empowers users to articulate their desired creations through descriptive input, with the assistant then managing the execution. Adobe states that this assistant boasts cross-application functionality, seamlessly operating across Firefly, Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, Express, Illustrator, and other proprietary apps to fulfill user tasks.

User control over the AI assistant's outputs is flexible, allowing for manipulation via text prompts, as well as dedicated buttons and sliders. The assistant is capable of suggesting pertinent actions, orchestrating complex interactions between different actions and applications, and executing entire workflows, all while preserving the user's ability to intervene and guide the process at any point.

Furthermore, the agent offers context-sensitive controls that adapt to the specific project in progress. For example, when editing a product photograph set within a forest, the assistant might present a slider for intuitively adjusting the density of trees and foliage. Adobe emphasizes that the assistant will progressively learn from user creative preferences over time, refining its action suggestions accordingly.

Adobe is also rolling out "skills" for the assistant, which are predefined multi-step processes designed to automate common tasks. An illustrative example is the "social media assets" skill, which can automatically adapt images for various platforms by cropping or expanding them, optimizing file sizes, and efficiently storing the final outputs.

This launch aligns with Adobe's ongoing efforts to develop AI-powered assistants for key applications such as Photoshop, Express, and Acrobat. The company recently indicated its exploration into enhancing the interoperability of these assistants with third-party large language models.

While competitors like Canva and Figma are also advancing their agentic workflow capabilities, Adobe asserts its unique strength lies in its ability to unify its extensive and popular suite of existing creative tools.

“We have the opportunity with the Firefly AI assistant and with agentic experiences to remove some of the friction in learning this large catalog of tools we have and bring all of that value to our customers at their fingertips. And that’s the opportunity we have,” Alexandru Costin, vice president of AI and innovation, creativity and productivity business at Adobe, shared with TechCrunch.

In parallel, Adobe is introducing new enhancements to the broader Firefly tool. The AI video editor is receiving significant updates, including options for speech noise reduction, reverb and music adjustment, and a new color adjustment tool, alongside integration with Adobe’s stock library. Additionally, the Kling 3.0 and Kling 3.0 Omni models are being incorporated into Firefly’s expanding library of third-party AI models.
