Adobe announced on Thursday its intent to acquire Topaz Labs, a company renowned for its artificial intelligence models designed for video and image enhancement. This acquisition will integrate Topaz Labs into Adobe's creative business division.
Topaz Labs boasts a history spanning over two decades, during which it has developed advanced tools for video and image enhancement, notably earning an Emmy last year for its production technology. The company has recently introduced its proprietary AI models, including Astra for AI-powered video upscaling and Wonder for sophisticated image retouching and enhancement. Furthermore, Topaz Labs has pioneered technology enabling the efficient execution of extensive video models on standard consumer-grade GPUs.
Adobe, which currently features some of Topaz Labs' tools within its Creative Cloud suite, plans to integrate Topaz's advanced AI models into its Firefly AI application and across its broader range of image and video editing suites. Additionally, Adobe confirmed that Topaz's products will continue to be accessible as standalone services directly through Adobe's website.
Deepa Subramaniam, Vice President of Product Marketing for Creative Cloud at Adobe, highlighted the utility of Topaz Labs' products for professionals. She noted that those seeking to blend real-life footage with AI-generated clips could leverage Topaz's capabilities for critical tasks such as sharpening intricate details, minimizing visual noise, or effectively restoring historical archival footage.
In an emailed statement, Subramaniam emphasized, "Topaz Labs brings deep expertise in optimizing large, complex AI models to run directly on device, a capability that will allow Adobe to deliver faster, more responsive experiences for customers and make advanced AI more accessible and cost-effective for creatives. In addition, Topaz Labs is trusted by professionals of all creative crafts – from designers and video professionals to photographers and enterprise creative teams."
This acquisition underscores Adobe's strategy amidst intense competition in the image and video editing sector, particularly from rivals like Canva and Blackmagic Design, the owner of DaVinci Resolve. Adobe has aggressively integrated AI capabilities across its entire application suite and established Firefly as an AI-centric media editing studio. Through strategic acquisitions such as Topaz Labs, Adobe aims to solidify user loyalty, deterring them from seeking alternative software for video editing and enhancement needs, thereby reinforcing engagement within its comprehensive ecosystem.
The transaction is projected to finalize in the latter half of 2026, according to Adobe.
