Europe is currently experiencing a significant wave of opposition directed at data centers.
This morning, protesters forcibly entered the construction site of a new Microsoft data center in Amsterdam. The "Geef Tegengas" group organized the demonstration to halt the development of three massive 85-meter towers located on the city outskirts.
According to Reuters, approximately 100 individuals gained access to the site, where some climbed a crane to hang a banner reading "fuck AI." The activists also displayed a "Microsoft powers genocide" banner and chanted slogans including "Microsoft has got to go" and "free palestine."
The opposition follows a temporary ban on new data centers in Amsterdam, which was extended until 2030 after being announced in late 2023. Despite these restrictions, Microsoft remains the sole tenant of this project, which has been in the planning stages since 2016. Constructed by the British developer Pure Data Centres, the site has reportedly navigated regulatory loopholes to reach the current construction phase.
The unrest in Amsterdam coincides with a wider wave of protests across Europe, including a mock Israeli military checkpoint set up outside a Microsoft data center in Dublin earlier this week. Additionally, recent U.S. voter decisions have rejected unrestrained data center development, as AI facilities continue to face local resistance regarding their community impact.
Microsoft has faced further setbacks, having abandoned the UK's largest data center project last month due to power supply limitations. The company has also been targeted by protests from former employees, including an interruption of its 50th anniversary party where activists condemned the use of Microsoft technology in the conflict in Gaza, labeling AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman a "war profiteer."
Tensions have escalated internally, with a Microsoft employee disrupting the Build developer conference last year to interrupt CEO Satya Nadella's keynote. Further internal conflict arose when the company fired two employees who occupied the president's office several months later.
