In a landscape where successful AI hardware ventures are rare, Plaud is emerging as a notable exception. The company, specializing in AI-powered notetakers, has strategically targeted professionals with demanding meeting schedules. Plaud reports impressive sales figures, having sold over 2 million devices, which include its compact Plaud Pins and credit-card-sized gadgets designed to attach to smartphones. Complementing its hardware success, the company's subscription service has achieved an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $100 million.

Plaud distinguishes itself by highlighting a common reliance among many AI companies on digital documents and prompts derived from memory. The company posits that its screenless devices offer a superior approach, enabling users to engage in real-life conversations and subsequently recall crucial points, comprehensive summaries, and actionable items with greater accuracy and context.

"Most AI companies have scaled through software behind a screen. We took a different path," stated Nathan Xu, co-founder and CEO of Plaud. He elaborated, "The conversations that actually move things forward don't happen on a keyboard. We built the interface for the post-screen world. And the market validated it."

Plaud's product roadmap has seen continuous innovation. Last year, it introduced the Plaud Pro at $179, followed this year by the new Plaud Pin S, offered at a similar price point. Beyond hardware, the company has significantly ramped up its software development. Earlier this year, it launched a desktop application capable of capturing Granola-style notes from online meetings via system audio. More recently, last month saw the introduction of Plaud Teams, featuring shared memory functionality, specifically designed to cater to enterprise clients.

Customers purchasing Plaud hardware receive 300 minutes of free transcription service. However, for individuals who participate in numerous meetings daily, this complimentary allowance is quickly exhausted. To accommodate heavier usage and unlock additional features, users can subscribe to monthly, annual, or add-on plans. Nathan Xu revealed to TechCrunch that a significant portion of Plaud's revenue is generated by nearly 50% of its device users upgrading from basic to pro or unlimited subscription tiers.

Currently, Plaud does not offer standalone software subscriptions. This means that, typically, only individuals who own a Plaud device are able to purchase its premium paid plans.

The market for meeting note-taking hardware is highly competitive, featuring established players such as accessories giant Anker, Transsion-backed Viaim, Sequoia China-backed Vibe, and YC-backed Pocket.
