The proliferation of powerful large language models (LLMs), now effortlessly accessible, has dramatically simplified the process for malicious actors to disseminate spam across the internet. For anyone who has spent even a brief period online in recent years, it's evident that this development has exacerbated the already significant challenge posed by spam and bot-generated content.

In response, Reddit has announced the deployment of new tools, themselves powered by LLMs, specifically designed to curtail this surge in spam, much of which was initially created using similar AI technologies. This approach, though somewhat ironic, underscores the necessity for platforms in the current AI era to "fight fire with fire." According to Reddit, its systems successfully block an estimated 23 million spam views daily and identify approximately 25,000 new spam posts and comments each day.

While social platforms have long invested in automated tools for spam reduction, Reddit asserts that these latest updates are achieving a significantly higher detection rate.

A Reddit blog post elaborates on their strategy, stating, “We leverage LLMs to catch the highly subtle, coordinated patterns of fake behavior and artificial hype that older systems once missed.” The company further claims that these enhancements led to a 20% reduction in users' exposure to spam during the period of January to March, compared to the preceding three months.

Other major platforms are also adapting to the influx of AI-generated content. YouTube, Meta, and Instagram, for instance, permit users to post AI-created material provided it is clearly disclosed. TikTok has gone a step further, allowing users to actively adjust the volume of AI-generated content they wish to encounter.

The ability of platforms to more rapidly detect AI-generated content carries broader implications, including the potential for quicker identification of violative material such as hate speech. However, platform experts consistently emphasize that for the most effective results, AI-driven content moderation must always be complemented by human oversight.
