South Korea is preparing to build the world’s largest AI data centre, positioning itself for global leadership in technology. The ambitious project, led by Fir Hills, a division of California-based Stock Farm Road, Inc. (SFR), will begin construction in winter 2025.
It's expected to generate an initial annual revenue of $3.5 billion. The facility will be located in Jeollanam-do Province, a result of a strategic collaboration involving LG heir Brian Koo and Dr. Amin Badr-El-Din, who has extensive experience in technology and energy.
According to Dr. Badr-El-Din, this venture represents a significant leap in Korea’s technological advancement. He expressed pride in partnering with Stock Farm Road and the Jeollanam-do government to build essential infrastructure for next-generation AI. Initially valued at over $10 billion, the project may rise to $35 billion as the centre aims for a completion date in 2028 and will feature a 3-gigawatt capacity.
This advanced facility will include innovative cooling systems and superior fibre bandwidth, allowing it to manage sudden energy demand effectively. This development not only promises to enhance AI capabilities but is also poised to positively impact South Korea’s economy. The global data centre services market is projected to reach $438.3 billion by 2030, and this project positions South Korea as a key player.
Koo noted that this data centre could elevate the nation’s technological and economic landscape. The scale of the project is set to create over 10,000 jobs in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, and research. The centre is designed to cater to the needs of major corporations, including hyperscalers, ensuring robust service provision.
Looking ahead, SFR plans to establish AI infrastructure partnerships across Asia, Europe, and the US within the next 18 months. With notable companies like Samsung and LG leading in technology, South Korea continues to solidify its standing in AI and data infrastructure. The Jeollanam-do project showcases how effective public-private partnerships can drive innovation and significant economic growth.
