Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has added a new memory feature to its Grok chatbot, moving it closer to matching competitors like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The update, announced Wednesday night, allows Grok to remember details from previous conversations, enabling more personalized and context-aware replies.
With memory enabled, Grok can now recall user preferences and use them to tailor recommendations or advice. This means that the more a person interacts with Grok, the more useful and customized its responses become. This feature mirrors similar tools already available in ChatGPT and Gemini, which have long used persistent memory to enhance user interactions.
In a post on X, Grok’s official account emphasized that the memory function is designed to be transparent. Users can see exactly what information Grok has remembered and can choose to delete individual memories at any time. There’s also the option to turn memory off entirely through the Data Controls page in the settings menu.
The memory feature is currently in beta and accessible via Grok.com as well as the Grok apps for iOS and Android. However, it is not yet available for users in the European Union or the United Kingdom. Users can manage or delete specific memories directly from the chat interface on the web, and similar options will be added to the Android app soon.
xAI has also confirmed that work is underway to bring this memory feature to Grok’s integration on X, Musk’s social platform. This step is part of xAI’s broader effort to enhance Grok’s capabilities and bring it in line with the personalization features offered by other major AI chatbots.
