X, the social network led by Elon Musk, is expanding access to its AI chatbot, Grok, which has been available exclusively to premium users. The platform is now testing a free version in select regions, sparking curiosity among users eager to try out the advanced technology without a subscription.
The free version of Grok is currently available in New Zealand, with other regions likely to follow. However, there are some limitations for free users. They can make up to 10 queries every two hours with the Grok-2 model, or 20 queries with the lighter Grok-2 mini model.
Additionally, users are allowed three image analysis questions per day.
To use Grok for free, users need to have an account thatโs at least seven days old and linked to a phone number. This move marks a significant step for xAI, the company behind Grok, as it seeks to widen its user base and compete with AI giants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Grok-2, which was launched in August, includes image generation capabilities and can now analyze images as well. These features were initially exclusive to premium and Premium+ users. By offering a free version, xAI is likely looking to accelerate product feedback and enhance its AIโs performance. In addition to this, xAI is reportedly in talks to raise billions, with a target valuation of $40 billion. With this move, X seems determined to make its mark in the growing AI competition, making powerful tools like Grok accessible to more people.
