President Donald Trump announced a significant private-sector project on Tuesday, aiming to transform AI infrastructure in the United States. The initiative, named Stargate, is backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle and involves an investment of $500 billion. The plan includes building 20 large data centers that will generate over 100,000 jobs.
For immediate deployment, backers have already allocated $100 billion, with the remaining investment scheduled to be distributed over the next four years.
This discussion took place at the White House, where SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison were present. This initiative underscores America’s determination to remain at the forefront of AI development.
Ellison highlighted that the first of these data centers, each measuring 500,000 square feet, is currently being constructed in Texas. These centers are intended to support advanced AI applications, such as analyzing electronic health records to assist healthcare providers.
Trump noted that the project’s initiation is a result of his leadership, with executives emphasizing their support. “We wouldn’t have decided to do this unless you won,” Son remarked. Despite the ambitious scope of the project, there are rising concerns regarding the energy requirements of AI data centers.
Trump assured that efforts would be made to streamline energy production for these facilities, even as experts caution about potential power shortages across the nation in the next decade.
This announcement arrives during a period of increasing investment in AI since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in 2022, which led to broader industry adoption.
Following the news, shares of Oracle and other tech companies, including Nvidia and Dell, saw an uptick, indicating positive market sentiment regarding the Stargate initiative.
