OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has dismissed Elon Musk’s recent $97.4 billion bid for OpenAI’s nonprofit, calling it an attempt to hinder the company’s progress. Speaking at the AI Action Summit in Paris, Altman stated that Musk, as a competitor, is trying to challenge OpenAI through his AI company, xAI, which has secured significant funding. He further added that Musk’s actions stem from insecurity, suggesting that he is not a happy person.
Altman had already rejected Musk’s offer in a public post, making it clear that OpenAI has no interest in accepting the bid. Despite this, the OpenAI board has not yet made a formal decision on the matter. Board member Larry Summers mentioned in an interview that he has received no official communication regarding Musk’s offer beyond media reports.
The situation adds to the ongoing tensions between Musk and OpenAI. Musk, a former co-founder of OpenAI, has been openly critical of the company’s direction, particularly its partnership with Microsoft and shift from a nonprofit to a capped-profit model. Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to push forward with AI advancements, maintaining its stance against Musk’s influence.
