Reddit is preparing to introduce an upgraded AI-powered search experience in 2025, aiming to make it easier for users to find relevant discussions and answers to complex questions. CEO Steve Huffman announced that the platform will integrate Reddit Answers into its search system, allowing users to ask questions and receive summarized responses from different threads.
Reddit has accumulated a vast amount of user-generated discussions over the past two decades, and this new feature will help unlock valuable insights. Huffman emphasized that the company will continue refining this tool to improve the user experience.
To support this initiative, Reddit is hiring engineers to form a dedicated search team focused on enhancing these capabilities. The company has already been using AI for various features, including translation and content recommendations.
Last year, Reddit tested AI-powered search result pages that summarize and highlight discussions from different communities. These advancements are part of the company’s broader strategy to leverage AI for growth and engagement.
Despite these innovations, Reddit’s recent financial results fell short of investor expectations. The platform reported 101.7 million daily active unique users in Q4 2024, marking a 39% increase from the previous year but missing projections of 103.1 million. Investors were also concerned about the impact of Google’s search algorithm changes on Reddit’s traffic.
Huffman suggested that integrating AI-powered search into the platform’s onboarding process could help drive user retention and revenue. He believes that making search more intuitive and directly accessible on Reddit will encourage users to rely on the platform for queries instead of external search engines. Additionally, the data collected through search interactions could offer new monetization opportunities for Reddit.
