Perplexity launched its new API service, Sonar, on January 21, 2025, enabling enterprises and developers to integrate the startup’s generative AI search tools into their applications.
Sonar is designed to improve the accuracy and authority of AI search by connecting to the internet in real-time, offering answers informed by trusted sources. Unlike current AI tools, which rely on training data, Sonar provides more reliable, up-to-date information.
Perplexity offers two versions of Sonar: the base version and Sonar Pro. The base version is cost-effective, fast, and ideal for developers seeking quick access to the AI search engine.
In contrast, Sonar Pro offers more detailed responses, suitable for complex inquiries, and provides deeper functionality. Both versions allow enterprises to customize the sources the AI pulls information from, making it more adaptable for specific needs.
The launch of Sonar also expands Perplexity’s reach beyond its own app and website. One early adopter, Zoom, is using the API to power its AI assistant for video conferencing.
The integration allows Zoom’s AI chatbot to provide real-time, web-informed answers during video calls, with citations included, without requiring users to leave the platform. This integration highlights Sonar’s potential to enhance user experience in various applications.
Sonar provides a new revenue stream for Perplexity, which could be crucial for the startup’s growth. The company claims that Sonar is the most affordable AI search API available.
The base version costs $5 for every 1,000 searches, along with additional costs based on word usage. Sonar Pro, with enhanced capabilities, has a more complex pricing structure but offers superior functionality, including more citations and higher performance on factual correctness benchmarks.
Perplexity’s efforts to grow revenue are critical as it seeks to expand, particularly after its recent funding round, which raised $73.6 million and valued the company at around $520 million.
