OpenAI and Softbank have revealed plans for a massive $500 billion investment in a system of AI data centers, aimed at advancing artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The announcement came during a White House press conference, where prominent figures such as Masayoshi Son, Sam Altman, and Larry Ellison, representing Softbank, OpenAI, and Oracle respectively, joined former President Donald Trump to introduce The Stargate Project.
This ambitious project will be funded by the companies involved and will span four years, with a focus on building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States.
According to OpenAI’s statement, the initial tech partners in this project include major players such as Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI.
Construction is already underway in Texas, with further evaluations taking place for additional sites across the country. The statement emphasized that Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will work closely to develop and manage this groundbreaking computing system, which aims to support the rapidly growing demands of AI and machine learning.
Alongside this announcement, Microsoft revealed an update to its existing partnership with OpenAI. While the core elements of their deal remain intact until 2030, Microsoft disclosed that OpenAI’s new agreement includes a significant Azure commitment.
This updated deal will continue to support all of OpenAI’s products, including training, and expand the infrastructure needed for future AI advancements. However, there is a change in the exclusive arrangement: Microsoft now holds the right of first refusal when it comes to OpenAI’s plans for new capacity, ensuring they remain a key player in the evolution of AI infrastructure.
The Stargate Project is expected to impact the AI landscape significantly, providing the necessary infrastructure to meet the growing computational needs of AI technologies.
This development marks a significant step forward in the collaboration between tech giants to shape the future of AI.
