OpenAI has evidently achieved significant product-market fit among India's younger demographic. The company announced on Friday that individuals aged 18 to 24 contribute to nearly 50% of messages sent to ChatGPT within the nation, with users under 30 collectively comprising 80% of this engagement.

The AI research firm further noted that Indian users predominantly leverage ChatGPT for professional purposes, with 35% of all messages dedicated to work-related tasks, a figure surpassing the global average of 30%.

Notably, OpenAI's coding assistant, Codex, is experiencing robust adoption. The company reported that Indian users engage with Codex three times more frequently than the global median, and its weekly usage has quadrupled since the introduction of its Mac application two weeks prior. Furthermore, users in India submit three times the median number of coding-related inquiries.

This trend aligns with recent observations from Anthropic, which earlier this week indicated that 45.2% of Claude's tasks in India are directly related to software development use cases.

Beyond professional applications, OpenAI revealed that 35% of messages from Indian users to ChatGPT sought guidance, 20% involved inquiries about general information, and another 20% were requests for writing generation or assistance.

As OpenAI's second-largest market, boasting over 100 million weekly users, India has been a focal point for the company's strategic efforts to attract users to its AI tools and services. These initiatives include offering a subscription tier priced under $5 within the country and conducting promotional campaigns last year to accelerate adoption.

"AI adoption is moving faster than our ability to measure it – and that’s a challenge for anyone trying to make smart decisions. Signals is our way of putting real-world evidence on the table, so India’s AI debate can be grounded in facts, not hype," stated Ronnie Chatterji, OpenAI’s chief economist, emphasizing the need for data-driven discussions.

OpenAI has experienced a particularly dynamic period in India, coinciding with the nation's hosting of a significant AI Impact Summit in New Delhi this week. The company is set to inaugurate new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru this year and has forged a substantial partnership with the Tata Group conglomerate to secure 100 megawatts of AI compute capacity and facilitate the distribution of ChatGPT Enterprise through Tata's IT services subsidiary, TCS.

The AI lab has also finalized agreements with prominent entities including fintech company Pine Labs, travel platforms Ixigo and Makemytrip, and food and grocery delivery service Eternal. Furthermore, it has established partnerships with various educational institutions, aiming to make its tools accessible to over 100,000 students within the next six years.
