Google is making a significant change to its Workspace suite by offering AI features in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, and other apps at no extra cost.
Previously, users had to pay an additional $20 per user per month for the Gemini Business plan to access these AI tools, but now they are available for free.
This move comes as Google intensifies competition with Microsoft, OpenAI, and others in the race to develop the most comprehensive AI-powered office suite.
However, there is a trade-off: Google is increasing the price of all Workspace plans. According to Jerry Dischler, Google’s president of cloud applications, companies will pay around $2 more per user per month for the AI-enabled Workspace plans, with the base subscription price rising from $12 to $14 per month.
The AI features included in Workspace are diverse and powerful. They range from email summaries in Gmail to automated designs for spreadsheets and videos, as well as a meeting note-taker and writing tools integrated across apps.
The suite also provides access to Google’s Gemini bot, a robust AI tool capable of acting as a chatbot, searching for information, and navigating a user’s files and data efficiently.
Google highlights that its AI solutions are highly integrated, offering a seamless experience for users who adopt its full system.
Dischler notes that cost has often been a barrier for companies adopting AI tools, as they approach such upgrades cautiously.
By removing the additional charge, Google aims to make these tools more accessible, proving their value to businesses and encouraging widespread adoption. New features and updates to Workspace are expected to roll out rapidly, reflecting Google’s commitment to innovation in this space.
