Google has introduced a major update to its Gemini Deep Research feature, allowing it to access users’ Gmail, Drive, and Chat data to create more informed AI-generated reports. Designed for deeper, multi-step analysis rather than quick answers, Deep Research can now use personal files alongside web searches to deliver customized insights and summaries.

When users select “Deep Research” in the Gemini interface, they can choose from four data sources: standard Google Search, Gmail, Drive, and Chat. This means the AI can reference emails, documents, slides, sheets, PDFs, and chat logs to enrich its research output. Google describes the feature as one of its most requested additions, emphasizing how it can combine private workspace data with public information to produce detailed, context-aware results.

For example, a team could use Deep Research to generate a market analysis for a new product by analyzing early brainstorming documents, related email threads, and project plans. It could also compile competitor reports that integrate company data with information from the web. Users can refine the AI’s results by asking follow-up questions, add new information, or export the entire report to a Google Doc or even an AI-generated podcast.

Currently available only on desktop, the enhanced Deep Research feature will soon roll out to mobile devices. With this integration, Google aims to make Gemini not just a conversational assistant but a true research partner capable of analyzing both public and private data sources to produce comprehensive, actionable insights.
