Starting in 2026, ChatGPT users will be able to make purchases using PayPal, marking the payment platform’s entry into OpenAI’s chatbot ecosystem. The integration will allow users to complete transactions directly within ChatGPT’s interface through the recently introduced Instant Checkout feature. This option will work similarly to PayPal’s checkout process on other websites, giving users access to their stored payment methods, shipping details, and contact information.
The move follows OpenAI’s addition of a “Buy Now” button and the Instant Checkout tool, which debuted with select retailers like Etsy and Shopify and has since expanded to Walmart. The system operates on OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, which automatically includes businesses that already support PayPal without requiring separate onboarding.
This partnership represents a growing effort to turn ChatGPT into an all-in-one digital assistant capable of handling more than just conversation. With new purchasing capabilities, users can shop across OpenAI’s platforms, including the upcoming Atlas browser and a rumored hardware device being developed in collaboration with designer Jony Ive.
By integrating PayPal, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a personal shopping assistant that can manage transactions seamlessly. The feature also hints at potential new revenue streams for OpenAI as it continues expanding its AI-driven ecosystem. PayPal’s involvement signals broader industry confidence in AI-powered commerce and offers users more flexibility and trust when making payments through conversational interfaces.
The addition of PayPal payments underscores OpenAI’s commitment to making ChatGPT a central hub for daily digital interactions, blending convenience, personalization, and commerce into one intelligent platform.
