Apple Partners with Google Gemini to Power Next-Gen Siri

Apple is reportedly partnering with Google to use a customized version of its Gemini AI model to power the next generation of Siri. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will pay Google around $1 billion each year for access to the technology, which will enable Siri to handle advanced AI tasks like generating summaries and performing complex planning functions.

The custom Gemini model will run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, designed to keep user data secure, while Apple’s in-house AI models will continue to manage other Siri functions. Bloomberg notes that the Gemini model powering Siri will operate with 1.2 trillion parameters, significantly larger than the 150 billion parameters used in Apple’s own cloud-based AI model.

Apple’s decision follows delays in launching its upgraded Siri with AI features. Earlier reports suggested Apple had considered using models from OpenAI or Anthropic before ultimately settling on Google. This new partnership, however, is distinct from Apple’s existing plans to integrate chatbot capabilities like ChatGPT into Siri.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently told investors that the revamped Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence, is expected to roll out next spring. He also indicated that Apple remains open to further collaborations with other AI partners while continuing to build its own AI models. Although Apple is leveraging Google’s Gemini for now, the company reportedly aims to develop its own system that could eventually replace the partnership in the future.

This collaboration marks a significant step for both companies, combining Apple’s privacy-focused ecosystem with Google’s powerful Gemini AI technology to deliver a smarter, more capable Siri experience.
