Anthropic’s Amodei Says DeepSeek’s Risk to AI Sector Overblown

Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei expressed in a recent essay that concerns over the Chinese AI company DeepSeek posing a significant threat to U.S. AI leadership are largely exaggerated.

The essay, published on January 29, discusses the impact of DeepSeek’s model release on the stock market, specifically referencing Nvidia, whose stock dropped following these developments. Amodei finds this reaction confusing, asserting that the release of models from DeepSeek does not imply a negative outlook for other AI firms or for Nvidia itself.

DeepSeek recently launched its V-3 model, which reportedly approaches the performance of leading models while being less expensive to train. However, Amodei points out that a closer examination shows DeepSeek’s performance is comparable to U.S. models that are seven to ten months older and is merely a continuation of the trend toward reduced training costs. He highlights that the financial investment by DeepSeek is similar to that of many U.S. AI labs, further diminishing the perceived threat.

Regarding DeepSeek’s R1 model, which gained attention last week and contributed to the decline in Nvidia’s stock, Amodei argues that several firms could achieve similar outcomes. He identifies this period as a “crossover point,” where multiple companies can produce effective reasoning models, but he predicts this will soon change as firms advance further into scalability.

Moreover, Amodei discussed export control measures on chips, asserting they can help maintain a competitive edge for democratic nations over China in AI advancements. He emphasized the necessity for U.S. and allied AI companies to develop superior models to keep pace with Chinese advancements and cautioned against providing the Chinese Communist Party any technological edge unnecessarily.
