Digg's recent attempt to revive its platform, reminiscent of Reddit, rapidly faltered, yet its CEO is already conceptualizing a new strategy for its return.
Merely a year ago, Digg founder Kevin Rose, alongside Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian and other collaborators, unveiled plans for the link-sharing site's resurgence, pledging a system of "social discovery built by communities, not by algorithms." However, just two months following the public debut of its Reddit-inspired platform, Digg has declared a "hard reset," entailing the cessation of current operations and a "significant downsizing of the Digg team."
During the initial relaunch announcement, Rose conveyed to The Verge his belief that artificial intelligence could "remove the janitorial work of moderators and community managers." In stark contrast, Justin Mezzell, the current CEO of the revamped Digg, has posted a statement on the homepage acknowledging a significant challenge: "We knew bots were part of the landscape, but we didn’t appreciate the scale, sophistication, or speed at which they’d find us. We banned tens of thousands of accounts. We deployed internal tooling and industry-standard external vendors. None of it was enough."
Nonetheless, Mezzell frames this operational halt as a temporary measure, asserting, "We’re not giving up. Digg isn’t going away," and elaborating that "A small but determined team is stepping up to rebuild with a completely reimagined angle of attack." The accompanying blog post further reveals that Kevin Rose is slated to rejoin as a full-time employee in April, and the Diggnation podcast will maintain its recording schedule as the team prepares for yet another relaunch.
