Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has introduced new image generation capabilities through its API, responding to a growing demand for creative AI applications. Currently, the API offers only one model named “grok-2-image-1212.” This model can create up to ten images per request, allowing a maximum of five requests per second. Each image is priced at $0.07, which positions xAI competitively in the market.
In comparison, Black Forest Labs, an AI startup that partnered with XAI to implement image generation features on Musk’s social media platform, X, charges approximately $0.05 per image. Another notable competitor, Ideogram, has a higher pricing tier, charging around $0.08 per image.
Despite being in a pricing race, xAI’s current offering has limitations; the API does not yet allow users to modify the quality, size, or style of the generated images. Additionally, the prompts given in requests may be altered by a “chat model,” highlighting a potential area for future improvement.
Since launching its API in October 2024, xAI has been positioning itself to develop sustainable revenue streams as it continues to enhance its flagship models like Grok 3. To facilitate this growth, the company is reportedly in discussions with investors for a substantial $10 billion funding round, aiming to elevate its valuation to $75 billion.
In alignment with its ambition to broaden its technological capabilities, xAI has recently acquired a generative AI video startup. The company is also expanding its Memphis-based data center, which plays a crucial role in the training and operation of its various AI models. This move signals a commitment to scale its services and innovate further in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
