Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has launched its latest flagship model, Grok 3, late Monday night. This new model boasts enhanced capabilities integrated into the Grok apps available for iOS and the web, positioning itself against advanced competitors like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini. Key features include image analysis and responsive question answering. Initially expected in 2024, Grok 3 has been released after months of development.
The launch is supported by a significant investment, utilizing a massive data center in Memphis with around 200,000 GPUs for training. Musk highlighted that Grok 3 was built with ten times the computing power of its predecessor, Grok 2, and includes an expanded dataset featuring legal documents. During a live presentation, Musk described Grok 3 as a “maximally truth-seeking AI,” emphasizing its capability to present truths that may contradict political correctness.
Grok 3 comprises various models, including a faster, less accurate version known as the Grok 3 mini. While not all models are available immediately, the rollout has commenced. xAI claims Grok 3 outperforms GPT-4o in several benchmarks, such as AIME for math and GPQA for advanced science topics. It has also shown competitive results in Chatbot Arena, where users vote on AI responses.
Two specific versions, Grok 3 Reasoning, and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, are designed to think through problems similarly to reasoning models from other AI companies. These models reportedly surpass existing benchmarks and are accessible via the Grok app. New features include DeepSearch, which analyzes online information to provide summaries. Grok 3 will initially be available to subscribers of X’s Premium+ service, with additional features accessible through a subscription called SuperGrok.
Musk announced future features like a voice mode and plans to open-source Grok 2 once Grok 3 matures. He has expressed a desire to make Grok’s responses more politically neutral, though it remains uncertain if this objective has been achieved with Grok 3.
