Spotify is making it easier for authors to release AI-narrated audiobooks through a new partnership with ElevenLabs. The company announced that it will now accept audiobooks recorded using ElevenLabs’ AI voice technology, recognizing the potential of digital narration to grow the audiobook market.
While Spotify already allows AI-recorded audiobooks, this move expands its reach by integrating one of the leading AI voice providers. Previously, Spotify’s distribution platform, Findaway Voices, only accepted digitally narrated audiobooks from selected partners, such as Google Play Books, with all recordings undergoing a review process before publishing. With ElevenLabs now onboard, more AI-narrated content is expected to arrive on Spotify’s platform.
ElevenLabs enables authors to narrate books in 29 languages using various synthetic voices. The free version offers 10 minutes of text-to-voice per month, but premium plans provide more flexibility. The Pro plan, priced at $99 per month, allows users to generate up to 500 minutes of narration, roughly covering a standard audiobook’s length.
While Spotify emphasizes its belief in human narration’s value, it acknowledges that AI voices can make audiobook production more affordable, especially for independent authors. This approach can also help revive older backlist titles that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Importantly, Spotify ensures transparency by marking all AI-narrated audiobooks in the metadata. Listeners will see clear labels in the book descriptions, stating, “This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice,” so they can make informed choices.
With this new partnership, Spotify aims to diversify its audiobook library, offering more options for authors and listeners while maintaining clarity about AI involvement.
