Reddit is doubling down on its AI-powered strategy with a growing focus on users who turn to the platform for specific answers rather than community engagement. CEO Steve Huffman outlined the company’s vision for Reddit Answers, an AI chatbot designed to surface direct responses and summaries from existing Reddit posts, catering to users who search for topics via Google with “Reddit” appended to their query. These users, referred to as “Seekers,” differ from “Scrollers” who visit Reddit for interactive, community-driven discussions.
Launched in beta in December 2024, Reddit Answers has already reached 1 million weekly active users and is now available not only in the U.S. but also in the U.K., Australia, Canada, and India. The tool exists as a standalone feature in the app’s navigation bar but is set to be more deeply integrated throughout the platform in 2025. Huffman suggested merging the tool into Reddit’s main search box, enabling users to type full queries instead of fragmented keywords.
Reddit also plans to use Answers as a key onboarding tool for new users, helping them instantly discover relevant content on the platform. Additionally, Answers will play a role in improving how Reddit content appears through external search engines by offering clearer, more digestible summaries—making Reddit content more accessible while reducing overreliance on Google’s volatile algorithms.
This approach stems partly from Reddit’s experience in late 2024, when changes in Google Search impacted the platform’s user growth, alarming investors. Huffman emphasized that while Reddit wants its content visible on Google, the current search landscape remains unstable, and adapting to that unpredictability is crucial.
Reddit’s strategy appears to be paying off, as the company exceeded expectations in its Q1 earnings. It reported $392.4 million in revenue, marking a 61% increase year-over-year, and a daily active user base of 108.1 million—up 31% from last year.
