Perplexity Trolls Google’s AI Fail in New Ad Featuring Squid Game Star

Perplexity, the AI-powered search engine, has launched a bold new ad mocking Google’s past AI blunder. The ad stars Squid Game actor Lee Jung-Jae, who finds himself in a tense escape room scenario where he must answer various questions to get out. One of those questions directly references Google’s AI misstep, which once suggested using Elmer’s glue to help cheese stick to pizza.

The blunder originated from Google’s AI Overviews feature, which compiles search results into AI-generated summaries. However, when the tool mistakenly recommended mixing glue into pizza sauce, it sparked widespread criticism. Despite this, Google has doubled down on AI-generated search results, announcing that it will expand the use of AI Overviews for more queries, even if users don’t request them.

In the commercial, Lee first tries “Poogle,” a clear stand-in for Google, only to receive unsatisfactory results. Frustrated, he switches to Perplexity, which delivers a clear and accurate answer: “Use fresh, low-moisture mozzarella. Don’t use glue.” The ad playfully emphasizes Perplexity’s commitment to providing reliable AI-driven answers while highlighting its competitor’s past missteps.

While Perplexity positions itself as a strong alternative to Google, it has also faced criticism, with some accusing it of plagiarizing content from other sources. However, with this latest ad, the company is leaning into humor and competition to draw attention to its AI search capabilities.
