DeepSeek releases upgraded AI models that blend reasoning with autonomous tool use
OpenAI has taken an ownership stake in Thrive Holdings, the private equity firm whose parent company, Thrive Capital, is already one of OpenAI’s largest investors. The company did not spend money to secure the stake, according to reporting from the Financial Times, but agreed to provide Thrive’s portfolio businesses with its models, products, services, and staff. OpenAI may also receive payouts from the firm’s future returns, adding to what critics see as another circular deal in an industry known for tight-knit investment loops.
The partnership centers on two of Thrive Holdings’ top priorities: IT services and accounting. These areas rely heavily on structured, high-volume workflows, which both companies say are ideal for immediate gains from AI. Their shared goal is to improve speed, accuracy, and cost efficiency while maintaining strong service quality. Thrive CEO Joshua Kushner, who also leads Thrive Capital and is the brother of Jared Kushner, said AI will reshape industries from within as experts adopt it as a built-in tool rather than an outside add-on. President Trump has remained vocal in his support for AI expansion, and members of his administration, including David Sacks , stand to benefit as the sector grows.
Thrive’s strategy is to acquire IT and accounting companies specifically to transform them with AI. As part of the deal, OpenAI will gain access to data from Thrive’s businesses to help train its models. This gives OpenAI the chance to integrate its systems across Thrive’s portfolio while also securing a valuable new stream of training data. A source close to Thrive Capital said OpenAI will effectively act as the firm’s research arm, and the Financial Times reported that OpenAI hopes to partner more broadly with the private equity industry.
OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap said the Thrive agreement could be the first in a larger wave of similar collaborations, signaling a deeper shift in how AI firms and investment groups work together.
