OpenAI has introduced a powerful new AI tool called ChatGPT Agent, designed to complete complex, multi-step tasks by controlling a virtual computer. Unlike traditional chatbots, this agent can carry out real-world tasks like checking calendars, booking restaurants, and compiling detailed research, all without constant user input. The tool is powered by a newly developed model that was trained using reinforcement learning, combining the capabilities of two of OpenAI’s earlier tools, Operator and Deep Research. The company has merged the teams behind these tools into a new unit of about 20–35 people focused on the agent's development. In a demonstration, OpenAI showed how ChatGPT Agent could plan a user’s date night, generate a competitive research report, and even automate routine personal tasks, such as weekly office parking requests. The agent operates using a variety of tools, including a text and visual browser and a command terminal, with support for user-imported data. It runs tasks in the background and asks for user approval before taking irreversible actions, such as sending emails or making purchases. While the tool currently avoids financial transactions, it includes safety features like Watch Mode to monitor usage, particularly on sensitive websites. Though it may be slower with some processes, OpenAI emphasizes its usefulness in handling more difficult tasks that would otherwise take much longer for a human to complete. ChatGPT Agent is now rolling out to Pro, Plus, and Team users via an “agent mode” in the tools menu or by typing “/agent.” Enterprise and Education users will gain access later this summer, though there's no timeline for its release in the European Economic Area or Switzerland. ChatGPT Agent joins a rising trend of AI agents across the tech industry, with companies racing to build tools that resemble intelligent digital assistants like Iron Man’s J.A.R.V.I.S. As competition intensifies, OpenAI aims to stay ahead by expanding the range of tasks AI can independently manage.
