OpenAI is signaling the possible release of its next-generation AI model, GPT-5, with a livestream event scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. PT. The company teased the announcement in a post on X, cleverly replacing the “s” in “livestream” with a “5,” sparking widespread speculation.
Multiple clues have built anticipation for the launch. On Sunday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared a screenshot that displayed “ChatGPT 5” in the interface, and on Monday, the company’s head of applied research said he was “excited to see how the public receives GPT-5.” Altman had previously stated last month that the model would arrive “soon,” further hinting that the launch is imminent.
Reporting by The Verge’s Tom Warren supports the likelihood of a release. He noted last month that OpenAI was aiming to unveil GPT-5 in early August and had already seen Microsoft preparing additional server capacity in anticipation.
If confirmed, GPT-5 would represent a major leap forward in OpenAI’s AI development efforts. The model is expected to offer significant improvements in reasoning, capabilities, and possibly multimodal functions compared to its predecessors.
This potential unveiling follows another major announcement earlier in the week: the debut of GPT-OSS, OpenAI’s first open-weight model, designed to run locally on consumer hardware. Together, these developments mark a pivotal moment for OpenAI, signaling both the expansion of high-performance open models and the anticipated arrival of its most advanced system yet.
With the livestream scheduled and hints growing stronger, the tech world is closely watching Thursday’s event, which could set a new benchmark in generative AI capabilities.
