OpenAI has announced it will not release the AI model “Orion” this year, refuting recent claims about its product roadmap.
OpenAI’s Spokesperson :
“We don’t have plans to release a model code-named Orion this year. We do plan to release a lot of other great technology.”
On Thursday, The Verge reported that Orion, anticipated to be OpenAI’s next frontier model, was set for a December launch, with trusted partners receiving early access before it rolls out through ChatGPT.
The report also indicated that Microsoft, a close collaborator and investor in OpenAI, might gain access to Orion as soon as November. However, OpenAI has stated that The Verge’s report is inaccurate, though the company has not provided further details.
Orion, a step up from OpenAI’s GPT-4o, is said to be partly trained on synthetic data from its reasoning model, o1. OpenAI plans to continue developing both “GPT” models and reasoning models for different needs.
However, the company’s statement creates some confusion. It’s possible that the next big model won’t be Orion, or that a new model might launch by December but could be less powerful.
As the situation develops, all ayes are on OpenAI to see what their next steps will be and whether Orion will be released.
