OpenAI is planning a major transformation for ChatGPT, aiming to make it a “super assistant” that supports nearly every part of users’ lives. This vision comes from an internal strategy document, titled “ChatGPT: H1 2025 Strategy,” recently disclosed through legal proceedings in Google’s antitrust trial.
According to the document, OpenAI wants ChatGPT to evolve beyond being just a chatbot. The goal is to create a highly capable digital assistant that understands users deeply and helps with everyday tasks—from answering questions and managing calendars to finding lawyers or planning vacations. The assistant would combine broad utility with specialized skills, such as coding, offering a seamless and personalized digital experience.
Key advancements enabling this shift include smarter AI models, improved interaction tools like multimodal interfaces, and features such as real-time computer control. OpenAI also sees physical devices as essential to embedding ChatGPT more fully into daily life. The assistant could, for example, help at home with recipes, on the go with navigation, or at work by summarizing meetings.
CEO Sam Altman has previously compared ChatGPT to a “life advisor,” and this strategy aligns with that direction. OpenAI hopes the assistant becomes a constant presence—helping people reflect during solo walks or catch up with friends during busy days.
However, the document acknowledges challenges. OpenAI’s current infrastructure struggles to support growing user demand, prompting efforts to expand data centers. It also recognizes strong competition from tech giants like Apple, Google, and Meta. OpenAI emphasizes that its advantage lies in rapid innovation, brand strength, and independence from ad-driven models.
To remain competitive, OpenAI plans to advocate for regulations allowing users to choose ChatGPT as their default assistant across platforms. The company also points to its research lead, computing power, and fast-growing user base as key strengths.
Ultimately, OpenAI’s vision is to make ChatGPT an ever-present, trusted AI partner—able to assist wherever users are, across devices, platforms, and moments in life.
