OpenAI has appointed Fidji Simo, the current CEO of Instacart and former head of the Facebook app, to lead its applications division. Announced by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman via a post on X, the decision marks a significant move for the company as it continues to expand its product offerings.
Altman noted that Simoโs new role would allow him to dedicate more time to research, computing infrastructure, and AI safety.
Simo, who began her career at Facebook in 2011 and rose to lead the Facebook app in 2019, played a key role in building out the platformโs core features including News Feed, Stories, and live video.
Her leadership also helped strengthen Facebookโs advertising capabilities. In 2021, she took over as CEO of Instacart and led the company through its public offering in just two years.
Although she has already been a member of OpenAIโs board since last year, Simo will not leave her current role at Instacart immediately. In a message to Instacart employees shared via LinkedIn, Simo confirmed she would continue as CEO for the next few months until a successor is named, reassuring the team of a smooth transition.
Simoโs new appointment aligns with OpenAIโs broader strategy to scale its consumer applications. ChatGPT, the companyโs flagship AI product, is now available across multiple platforms including iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS.
Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly developing a new social networking platform similar to X (formerly Twitter), signaling deeper investment in user-facing products.
Her arrival comes at a pivotal time, as OpenAI aims to refine its product experience and interface with millions of users worldwide. Simoโs proven track record in scaling digital products and building customer-centric platforms positions her well to drive the companyโs next phase of app innovation. With strong leadership and expanded focus on consumer engagement, OpenAI is clearly preparing to strengthen its footprint beyond foundational AI models and into mainstream tech usage.
