OpenAI has introduced a new study mode for ChatGPT designed to help users learn by working through problems step by step instead of simply receiving answers. Available today for ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, with ChatGPT Edu support coming in the next few weeks, the mode focuses on interactive learning rather than quick solutions.
When enabled, study mode offers Socratic-style questioning, hints, and self-reflection prompts. Responses are organized into structured sections that highlight connections between topics, and lessons are customized based on skill level and memory from previous chats. It can also generate quizzes, encouraging users to engage more deeply with the material.
OpenAI says this feature was built using custom system instructions developed with teachers, scientists, and education experts. The company chose this approach to adapt quickly based on student feedback, even if it results in occasional inconsistencies. Future plans include adding better visualizations, goal tracking across conversations, and deeper personalization.
The launch comes as AI companies compete for student attention, with Anthropic launching a similar “Learning mode” for Claude earlier this year. While study mode can encourage self-guided learning, users can still switch it off at will, leaving motivation as a key factor in its effectiveness. OpenAI currently does not offer tools for parents or schools to enforce the feature, according to its VP of education, Leah Belsky.
Google also announced education-focused AI upgrades, including a new canvas mode in Search for building study guides and NotebookLM’s Video Overviews feature for narrated slideshows. These developments highlight a growing trend of AI tools designed to support learning and productivity.
