At CES 2025, Nvidia revealed its next step in AI innovation with digital characters powered by generative AI, designed to be much more than just chatbots.
These AI-driven “ACE” characters can now act as autonomous game companions, enhancing the in-game experience by understanding player goals, making decisions, and adapting to different situations.
Powered by small language models (SLMs), these characters can perceive and interact with their environment, providing a more immersive gameplay experience.
One of the major announcements was the introduction of the “PUBG Ally,” described as the world’s first Co-Playable Character (CPC).
This ally will be capable of communicating in game-specific terms, offering real-time strategic advice, finding loot, driving vehicles, and engaging in combat, much like a human teammate.
Nvidia’s demonstration showcased the Ally helping a player find loot, bringing over a vehicle, and even trying to outmaneuver opponents.
However, the demo video was heavily edited, leading to some skepticism about how well the AI teammate will perform in live gameplay. In addition to PUBG, AI characters powered by ACE are coming to other popular games.
For instance, Naraka: Bladepoint on PC and mobile will introduce AI teammates in 2025, assisting players with tasks such as locating items and offering suggestions for skills.
The AI companions will also be used in the upcoming life simulation game inZOI, as well as in boss encounters in the MMORPG MIR5.
With these advancements, Nvidia is pushing the boundaries of what AI can bring to interactive gaming, aiming to provide realistic, human-like support and adversaries within virtual worlds.
