At Meta’s LlamaCon conference on Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that artificial intelligence is responsible for writing between 20% and 30% of the code within Microsoft’s internal repositories. He shared this during a fireside chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who asked about the extent of AI involvement in Microsoft’s software development. Nadella explained that the level of AI-generated code varies by programming language, noting better outcomes in Python than in C++, where progress has been slower.
This disclosure highlights the increasing reliance on AI for software development tasks at one of the world’s largest tech companies. Nadella’s comments follow earlier remarks from Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, Kevin Scott, who predicted that by 2030, as much as 95% of all code could be written by AI. When asked the same question, Zuckerberg admitted he was unsure about the amount of AI-generated code at Meta. The exchange reflects the rapid and evolving integration of AI into core engineering workflows across major technology firms.
Google is also seeing similar trends. On a recent earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai mentioned that over 30% of the code at Google is now generated with the help of AI. However, the specific methods that companies like Microsoft and Google use to measure AI-generated code remain unclear. Without a consistent or transparent definition, the reported figures should be approached cautiously, as they may include varying degrees of human oversight or post-editing.
Despite these uncertainties, the trend underscores a major shift in how code is being developed, with AI tools playing a growing role in accelerating software engineering. The ability of AI to support or even replace human coders in certain tasks could reshape workflows, reduce development time, and redefine the skillsets needed in the tech industry over the coming years.
