Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia from Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI, went live on Monday as a direct challenger to Wikipedia. The site launched in version 0.1 with 885,279 articles and a design that mirrors familiar reference sites, featuring a dark landing page, a prominent search bar, and typography reminiscent of Wikipedia and modern AI apps.
Business Insider was able to access the site Monday evening ET, though some users said they encountered errors. The scale is far smaller than English Wikipedia, which lists more than seven million entries, but the debut signals Musk’s push to build an alternative he argues will be less politically biased. Over the past few years, Musk has accused Wikipedia of leaning left and has often criticized his own Wikipedia page. His public back-and-forth with Wikipedia cofounder Jimmy Wales has included sharp exchanges, with Wales recently expressing skepticism that current AI models can deliver the accuracy needed for a reliable encyclopedia.
That caution appeared warranted: one early Grokipedia entry about Musk included a factual error involving former U.S. presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s role in a DOGE group. The mistake follows other high-profile accuracy issues tied to xAI’s chatbot, Grok, which has previously surfaced false claims and conspiracy content before the company promised fixes. Musk has framed Grokipedia as part of xAI’s mission to better understand the world and has suggested Grok could be used to rewrite and correct large swaths of public knowledge. Representatives for xAI, X, Musk, and Wikipedia did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
For now, Grokipedia opens with a modest article count, a beta label, and early stability issues, positioning it as an ambitious but unproven rival to Wikipedia. Whether it can scale, improve reliability, and win trust from editors and readers will determine if Musk’s new project becomes a credible reference source or remains a provocative experiment.
