Meta has acquired Play AI, a startup known for developing artificial intelligence tools that generate realistic human-like voices. The acquisition, confirmed by a Meta spokesperson and first reported by Bloomberg, aligns with Meta’s growing investment in AI technologies.
An internal memo obtained by Bloomberg states that the entire Play AI team will join Meta as early as next week. Meta’s communication praised Play AI’s ability to create natural-sounding voices and provide a user-friendly platform for voice creation. The company sees the technology as a strong fit for its broader roadmap, including AI Characters, Meta AI, wearable devices, and tools for generating audio content.
The acquisition follows Meta’s recent moves to strengthen its AI capabilities. The company has been aggressively recruiting AI talent from rivals like OpenAI and recently entered a partnership with Scale AI. That collaboration brought Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang to Meta to lead a new team focused on developing superintelligence.
Although the financial terms of the Play AI acquisition have not been made public, Bloomberg previously reported that the two companies had been in discussions about a possible deal.
Play AI’s technology could help Meta improve how its virtual assistants and AI-powered avatars sound and interact with users, enhancing realism and user engagement. This is particularly relevant as Meta continues to build immersive experiences across its hardware and software ecosystem, including VR headsets, smart glasses, and social platforms.
The acquisition signals Meta’s continued push to lead in AI development, particularly in areas where natural interaction plays a critical role. With Play AI's tools integrated into Meta’s ecosystem, users could soon experience more lifelike AI voices across multiple devices and applications.
