Grammarly has overhauled its product with a new document-based interface built on Coda, the productivity platform it acquired last year. The redesign uses a block-first editor so you can add tables, columns, separators, lists, and headers, and insert rich text blocks to highlight key points or add tips and alerts. A sidebar now hosts an AI assistant that can summarize text, answer questions, and offer writing suggestions within the same workspace. The update adds several AI tools aimed at students and professionals. Reader Reactions lets you choose a reader persona and preview how that audience might respond to your draft. Grader can review work against an instructor’s guidelines and publicly available course materials. Citation Finder helps locate and generate citations from public sources. Paraphraser adjusts tone while keeping the original meaning. Grammarly has also introduced agents that can flag plagiarism and AI-generated content. Luke Behnke, the company’s VP of enterprise product, acknowledged that AI-detection tools are imperfect but said Grammarly has tuned its detector to be the most accurate it can offer. He added that the detector is meant to give students a view into what might appear AI-written before submission; for policy enforcement, educators should use the company’s authorship tool. The company frames these changes as a balance between helping people write with AI and discouraging misuse. It says it has a “moral imperative” to teach students how to use AI responsibly and prepare them for the workforce. Grammarly plans to add more agents across its products, a direction it reinforced with last month’s acquisition of email client Superhuman. The push follows a $1 billion raise in May from General Catalyst to support acquisitions and expand sales and marketing. With its Coda-based foundation, block-first editor, and in-product assistant, Grammarly is positioning itself as a full writing workspace that can draft, review, cite, and check originality in one place.
