Google Unveils Veo 2 Video AI for Gemini Subscribers

Google is officially rolling out its latest video-generating AI model, Veo 2, to users subscribed to Gemini Advanced—its premium artificial intelligence plan. The release marks a strategic move by Google to compete with OpenAI’s Sora and other fast-evolving synthetic media platforms, such as Runway, which recently launched a new video model and secured over $300 million in funding.

Beginning Tuesday, users with Gemini Advanced access can select Veo 2 from the model menu within the Gemini app. The tool allows the creation of eight-second video clips in 720p resolution, formatted in a 16:9 aspect ratio. These videos can be shared directly to platforms like TikTok and YouTube or downloaded as MP4 files, each watermarked using Google’s SynthID technology to indicate AI generation. However, there is a monthly cap on the number of videos users can generate, and current access excludes Google Workspace business and education accounts.

In addition to the core Veo 2 rollout, Google is introducing integration with Whisk—an experimental feature within Google Labs. Whisk enables users to generate images from prompts and, with its new “Whisk Animate” capability, convert those images into Veo 2-powered video clips. These experimental features are available to users on the $20-per-month Google One AI Premium plan.

While the technology is still in its early stages, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has hinted at future plans to integrate Veo with Gemini’s broader AI systems to enhance their grasp of physical environments. This direction suggests deeper applications beyond creative content, potentially influencing how AI perceives and interacts with the real world.
