Google has decided to remove its AI assistant, Gemini, from the main Google app used on iOS devices. This shift aims to encourage users to download the separate Gemini app, allowing Google to better compete with other AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. However, this change worries some experts, as it might limit Gemini’s audience.
The Google app is already popular, and many users might not be interested in downloading another app. An email sent by Google informed users about this change, stating, “Gemini is no longer available in the Google app.” It advised users who still wish to access Gemini on their iOS devices to download it from the App Store. The standalone Gemini app was launched for iOS users globally late last year, but until now, it was also available within the main Google app.
Through the Gemini app, users can engage in voice conversations, connect with Google services like Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail, ask questions, explore topics, plan trips, create AI-generated images, and receive AI summaries on various subjects.
Gemini allows interactions via text, voice, or even camera input, enhancing the user experience. Google also reminded users that while Gemini is advanced, it can still make mistakes, so verification of its answers is important.
For those interested in the enhanced features, upgrading to the paid subscription for Gemini Advanced is an option through the iOS app, which also provides access to the Google One AI Premium plan. If iOS users attempt to use Gemini through the Google app, they’ll see a message prompting them to download the new app, highlighting Google’s push for this transition.
This strategy carries some risk for Google, as relying on users to download a new app may lead to reduced usage of Gemini, though it may allow for quicker updates and new features in the future.
