Google has lowered the age restriction for its AI-powered note-taking app NotebookLM, making it available to Google Workspace for Education users of any age and to general consumers starting at age 13. The app was previously restricted to those 18 and older.
NotebookLM is designed to help students understand their study materials more effectively by offering advanced AI features such as Audio Overviews that turn notes into podcast-like summaries, interactive Mind Maps for visual idea organization, and newly introduced Video Overviews that convert notes, PDFs, and images into visual presentations.
Google says the change aims to give younger students better tools to engage with and comprehend their academic content. To address concerns over data privacy and responsible use of AI in education, stricter content policies have been implemented for users under 18. These measures are designed to prevent inappropriate responses, and Google confirmed that user chats and uploaded files are not reviewed by humans or used to train AI models.
The move comes as competition in AI-powered educational tools heats up, with OpenAI recently rolling out a study mode for ChatGPT. By expanding NotebookLM to younger users, Google is positioning itself more aggressively in the growing AI education market, where companies are racing to deliver tools that enhance learning while balancing safety and privacy.
