Google has introduced a new educational feature called Guided Learning in its Gemini AI platform, designed to support deeper understanding rather than just delivering answers. The launch comes shortly after OpenAI introduced Study Mode for ChatGPT, as both companies work to position their AI tools as educational partners instead of simple response engines.
Guided Learning acts like an AI tutor, helping students break down complex topics step-by-step. It adapts explanations to each user’s learning style and incorporates diagrams, images, videos, and interactive quizzes. The goal is to help users explore the reasoning behind answers, reinforcing critical thinking and comprehension skills.
Google's VP of Learning & Sustainability, Maureen Heymans, described the tool as a collaborative partner that supports students in areas ranging from science to writing and creative interests. Whether preparing for exams or drafting essays, students can use Guided Learning to actively engage with the material rather than passively receiving information.
In a broader update, Google announced that Gemini is being upgraded across the board to better assist with learning. It now automatically pulls in multimedia content such as YouTube videos and visual aids into responses. Students can also ask Gemini to generate flashcards and study guides based on their coursework or quiz results, making it a versatile study companion.
To encourage adoption, Google is offering students in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan. This plan provides extended access to powerful tools like Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, and Deep Research, expanding their ability to explore and understand complex topics.
With these updates, Google strengthens its position in the AI education space, directly challenging OpenAI’s similar initiatives. Both tech giants are racing to reshape how students learn with AI, aiming to make their platforms not only informative but genuinely instructive.
