Google Gemini Introduces Recall Feature for AI Conversations

Google’s Gemini AI chatbot has introduced a new feature that allows it to recall and summarize past conversations, making interactions more fluid and personalized. Announced in a blog post, this update ensures users no longer need to repeat previously shared details or search through old chat threads.

The feature is currently available for English-speaking subscribers of Google One AI Premium, a $20-per-month plan, with plans to expand to other languages and enterprise users in the coming weeks.

While this enhancement improves user experience, it raises privacy concerns. To address them, Google allows users to manage their chat history by reviewing, deleting, or setting time limits for stored conversations. Users who prefer not to have their chats remembered can turn off the recall feature through the “My Activity” settings in Gemini. Google assures that user conversations are not used for AI training.

Other AI chatbot providers have also been working on similar memory capabilities. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has previously emphasized that improved memory is one of the most requested ChatGPT features.

Both OpenAI and Google have introduced memory features that help chatbots retain user preferences, such as preferred greetings, food choices, or transportation habits. However, these features do not store and recall entire chat histories by default.By adding the recall function, Google aims to make Gemini more responsive and adaptable to individual users while maintaining control over privacy settings. This update places Google in direct competition with OpenAI as both companies refine AI assistants to better understand and assist users.
