After Tesla shareholders approved a new compensation deal potentially worth $1 trillion, CEO Elon Musk seemed to mark the occasion in his own unique way, by posting AI-generated videos on his social platform, X. Early Saturday morning, at 4:20 a.m. EST, Musk shared a clip made using Grok Imagine, a new photo and video generation tool from his company xAI. He revealed that the video came from his prompt, “She smiles and says, ‘I will always love you.’” The short clip features a lifelike woman standing on a rainy street, delivering the line in a noticeably synthetic voice.

Minutes later, Musk followed up with another Grok-generated video showing actress Sydney Sweeney saying, “You are so cringe,” though the voice was clearly artificial. While AI-generated media is becoming increasingly common, many X users mocked Musk’s posts, particularly the “always love you” video. Comments labeled it “the most divorced post of all time” and “the saddest post in the history of this website,” highlighting how AI experiments often blur personal and emotional boundaries online.

However, the sharpest criticism came from celebrated author Joyce Carol Oates, who responded to Musk’s weekend activity on X. Referring to a string of posts where Musk defended himself against a Texas senator’s remarks about his compensation, Oates noted that Musk never shares anything that shows enjoyment of everyday human pleasures like nature, family, or art. She went further, calling him “totally uneducated, uncultured,” and adding that even the poorest users might experience more “beauty and meaning” in life than the world’s richest man.

Musk replied bluntly, calling Oates “a liar” who “delights in being mean,” adding, “Not a good human.” His responses, as always, sparked another wave of online debate, balancing fascination with his use of cutting-edge AI tools against criticism of his increasingly personal and controversial posts.
