Chegg Sues Google for AI Traffic Loss Amid Strategic Shakeup

Chegg has filed a lawsuit in federal district court against Google, claiming that the companyโ€™s use of artificial intelligence summaries in search results has significantly hurt its website traffic and revenue.

The online education firm argues that Googleโ€™s AI Overviews, which display summaries above traditional search links in more than 100 countries, are drawing users away from its own site by using Cheggโ€™s proprietary content without permission.

Chegg alleges that Googleโ€™s models were trained using its collection of 135 million questions and answers and that the generated content competes directly with the information on Cheggโ€™s platform. This legal action comes nearly two years after former CEO Dan Rosensweig warned that students using OpenAIโ€™s ChatGPT were affecting Cheggโ€™s customer growth.

Currently valued at less than $200 million, Cheggโ€™s stock has fallen to just above $1 per share in after-hours trading, reflecting the companyโ€™s financial struggles. On an earnings call, President and CEO Nathan Schultz stated that Chegg has engaged Goldman Sachs to explore strategic alternatives, including potential acquisition or going private.

The company reported a net loss of $6.1 million on fourth-quarter revenue of $143.5 million, marking a 24 percent decline from the previous year. Furthermore, Chegg has forecast first-quarter revenue to be between $114 million and $116 million, which is below market expectations.

Schultz criticized Google for using its dominant market position to force companies like Chegg to provide their content for free, reaping financial benefits without any cost. Despite the lawsuit, Chegg is advancing its own AI strategy by incorporating technology from Metaโ€™s Llama, as well as models from Anthropic and Mistral, and has partnered with OpenAI to offer AI-powered learning assistance. The company, which also rents and sells textbooks, reported that its 3.6 million student subscriptions fell by 21 percent in the last quarter.
