ChatGPT’s mobile app has become a global phenomenon, reaching $2 billion in consumer spending since its May 2023 launch, according to app analytics firm Appfigures. That figure is about 30 times greater than the combined lifetime mobile earnings of competitors like Claude, Copilot, and Grok, cementing its dominance on iOS and Android. The growth in 2025 has been staggering. Between January and July, the app brought in $1.35 billion, a 673 percent jump compared with $174 million during the same period in 2024. That translates to nearly $193 million in monthly revenue, up from just $25 million per month last year. Even Grok, its closest rival, earned only $25.6 million in the same span—53 times less than ChatGPT. Mobile has proven to be a key battleground for AI adoption. While companies also rely on web subscriptions and APIs, app store purchases are often the first way people engage with AI tools. ChatGPT’s head start gave it a major advantage over Grok, which launched in late 2023 without dedicated mobile apps. Grok’s iOS app only debuted in January 2025, with Android following two months later. By then, ChatGPT already had a massive lead. Consumer spending per download also underscores ChatGPT’s edge. Globally, the app earns $2.91 per download, compared with $2.55 for Claude, $0.75 for Grok, and $0.28 for Copilot. In the U.S., ChatGPT’s figure soars to $10 per download, with American users contributing 38 percent of its total revenue. Germany ranks second at 5.3 percent. With an estimated 690 million installs worldwide—17 times Grok’s 39.5 million—ChatGPT’s reach is unmatched. In 2025 alone, it has already logged 318 million downloads, almost triple last year’s pace. India leads with 13.7 percent of lifetime installs, followed by the United States at 10.3 percent. The app’s runaway success shows how far ahead OpenAI is in the mobile AI race. The question now is whether any competitor can meaningfully narrow the gap as ChatGPT sets new benchmarks in both reach and revenue.
