Baidu has revealed its intention to open-source its upcoming Ernie 4.5 chatbot series, inspired by the impressive success of AI company DeepSeek. This strategic decision aims to boost the adoption of Baidu’s technology and make it more user-friendly. In addition to the open-source offering, Baidu plans to roll out premium chatbot services for free beginning in April, with the official open-source launch slated for June.
DeepSeek’s unique open-source strategy, along with its innovative R1 model, has garnered significant attention and promoted the widespread use of essential AI tools. Baidu’s CEO, Robin Li, emphasized how this approach influenced the company’s decision, showcasing his confidence in the capabilities of Ernie 4.5, which is touted to be Baidu’s most sophisticated model yet.
Despite notable advancements in artificial intelligence, Baidu’s financial performance in the fourth quarter of 2024 indicated a 2% revenue decline, amounting to 34.12 billion yuan. However, this figure slightly surpassed analysts’ expectations. Growth in the Cloud AI sector, which saw a 26% year-over-year increase, helped mitigate a 7% decrease in revenue from its online marketing division.
The ongoing economic challenges in China, particularly concerning the property market, have negatively impacted advertising demand. Nonetheless, despite these challenges, Baidu experienced a significant increase in usage on its Ernie platform, managing 1.65 billion daily interactions in December, up from 600 million in August. However, these positive engagement metrics failed to prevent a 7% drop in Baidu’s shares during early trading following the earnings report.
