Anthropic, the AI startup, is making a significant shake-up in its leadership team to bolster its internal incubator, Anthropic Labs. Chief Product Officer (CPO) Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram, is transitioning from his current role to co-lead the Labs team, a move reflecting the company's growing focus on experimental products. Krieger, who joined Anthropic two years ago, will now report directly to the company’s president, Daniela Amodei, as a member of the technical staff. He will work alongside Ben Mann, the product engineering lead, to drive forward the Labs team’s objectives.

Ami Vora, who was previously overseeing product strategy, will now step into Krieger's former role as the new head of product. In her expanded capacity, she will work closely with Rahul Patil, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, to scale Anthropic's key products, including the Claude AI assistant.

Since its inception in mid-2024, the Labs team has grown from just two members to a more substantial unit. With Krieger’s move, the company aims to double the size of this team in the next six months, reinforcing its commitment to advancing AI innovation.

In a statement, Krieger expressed his excitement about the change, highlighting the rapid evolution of AI capabilities and his desire to be at the forefront of this development. He believes that AI’s potential to tackle the world’s toughest challenges is now more accessible than ever, and he’s eager to get back into a hands-on, builder role.

This restructuring comes at a critical time for Anthropic, as it faces stiff competition from both tech giants like Apple and Google, as well as other ambitious AI startups, particularly OpenAI. The company is positioning itself as a leader in the race toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), hoping to differentiate its approach in an increasingly crowded field.
