Anthropic Adds Voice Chat to Claude AI Assistant

Anthropic has introduced a new voice mode for its Claude AI chatbot, allowing users to have spoken conversations with the assistant through its mobile app. Currently in beta and rolling out over the next few weeks, this feature is available in English and powered by Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 model by default. The new mode enables users to talk to Claude and hear spoken responses, offering a hands-free way to interact with the chatbot. It also displays key points on screen during conversations, making it easier to follow and engage with the content.

The voice feature supports interactions beyond simple chat. Users can discuss documents, images, and more, with the option to choose from five different voice styles. They can switch between typing and speaking at any time, and each session includes a transcript and summary for easy review. This puts Claude in line with similar offerings from other AI developers, such as OpenAI’s voice-enabled ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini Live, and xAI’s Voice Mode for Grok.

However, the voice mode comes with usage limits. Conversations using voice still count toward a user’s regular usage quota, and free users are typically allowed between 20 to 30 conversations. Additional functionality, like integration with Google Calendar and Gmail, is reserved for paid Claude subscribers. Access to Google Docs through voice commands is only available to enterprise users under the Claude Enterprise plan.

Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer, Mike Krieger, had previously confirmed the company was working on voice features for Claude in an interview with the Financial Times in March. The company was reportedly in discussions with Amazon, a key investor, and ElevenLabs, a startup focused on AI voice technology, to support these capabilities. It remains unknown whether those partnerships have been finalized.

This rollout marks another step in making AI assistants more interactive and accessible, especially in situations where typing isn’t practical. As the feature becomes more widely available, users can expect a more natural and dynamic way to engage with Claude.
