1Password is taking on a new security challenge: keeping AI browser agents from holding onto your passwords. The company, known for its popular password manager, has introduced a feature called Secure Agentic Autofill, which aims to protect login details when artificial intelligence tools browse the web on your behalf.
AI-driven browsers based on systems like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT are becoming more common. These agents can carry out tasks such as booking tickets or creating playlists. But unlike humans, who might forget a password, an AI agent risks remembering it too well — creating the possibility of future breaches. To prevent this, 1Password has developed a system that injects credentials directly into the browsing session, but only when the human user gives approval.
Here’s how it works. When an AI agent determines that login credentials are needed, it notifies 1Password. The software then identifies the right credentials and asks the user for approval through a human-in-the-loop process. Approval is confirmed using authentication methods like Touch ID on a Mac. Once approved, the credentials are delivered through an end-to-end encrypted channel between 1Password’s extension in the AI-controlled browser and the user’s device. Importantly, the AI agent and the underlying language model never see the actual credentials.
This system ensures that even as AI agents handle more of our online tasks, sensitive login details remain under user control. By requiring explicit human approval, 1Password prevents the risk of an AI bot inadvertently exposing or misusing passwords in the future.
Secure Agentic Autofill becomes available today in early access through Browserbase, a platform that builds browsers and tools specifically for AI agents. For 1Password, this move reflects both an awareness of the growing role of AI in everyday digital activity and a proactive approach to safeguarding users as new technologies reshape how we interact with the web.
