On Wednesday morning, YouTube announced an exciting evolution in AI during its event in New York. The company is integrating Google DeepMind’s AI video generation model, Veo, into YouTube Shorts. It enables creators to generate high-quality backgrounds and six-second clips with ease.
At Google I/O 2024, Veo launched as a groundbreaking video generation model, challenging OpenAI’s Sora and rivals like Pika, Runway, and Irreverent Labs. Capable of crafting incredible 1080p clips in cinematic styles, Veo is set to redefine video creation.
Veo in Shorts is a major upgrade from YouTube’s 2023 “Dream Screen” feature, which used text prompts for background generation. With Veo, creators can now generate even more enchanting clips and remix existing footage, taking video creativity to the next level.
For the first time, creators can now craft exceptional six-second video clips for YouTube Shorts. It’s incredibly simple—just select ‘Create’ and enter a prompt. Dream Screen generates four images, and with a quick selection, the chosen image transforms into a high-quality video clip. Putting more creativity and fun into Shorts.
To distinguish between “real” and “fake” content, the new feature will include watermarks on YouTube’s AI videos, similar to Google LLC’s SynthID technology.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan:
“Everything that we showed with AI was meant to really enhance the work that you do, make it faster, more efficient, to bring your creative ideas to life faster.”
Mohan shared in a presentation that he hopes the new feature will inspire even more creative Shorts using the company’s AI technology.
The ‘Dream Screen’ animated video backgrounds are set to launch later this year, while the highly anticipated six-second video clips will arrive in 2025.
Apart from the Veo integration, YouTube is unveiling exciting new features: “Jewels” and gifts, digital items for livestream interactions similar to TikTok’s “Gifts,” will debut in vertical live streams in the U.S. this year.
Additionally, YouTube is expanding its automatic dubbing tool to support French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, and is testing “expressive speech” to enhance dubbed audio with a creator’s unique tone and tone for a more natural experience.
After successful tests in Brazil, Turkey, and Taiwan, YouTube is expanding its “Hype” feature to more markets. This tool lets users show support for their favorite creators, with top videos featured on a special leaderboard.
Additionally, YouTube is introducing new AI tools in YouTube Studio, allowing creators to brainstorm video ideas, generate thumbnails and craft AI-assisted comments to engage with their audience.
